The SWE On-Line Study Program:

This extensive wine education program is comprised of a comprehensive, interactive series of on-line modules. This program is the first of it's kind that is officially tied into an international certification program. The program is designed to increase wine knowledge while preparing users to sit for the Society’s rigorous Certified Specialist of Wine (CSW) exam.


The SWE On-Line Study Program is divided into fifteen modules:

Each interactive study module is comprised of a pre-test, mini-quizzes, and a post-test. Scoring is immediate upon completion. A bookmarking feature allows the student to pick up a lesson where last left off, and questions are shuffled if a student opts to re-take any knowledge challenge.

An optional 100-question multiple choice test, designed to serve as “a litmus test for readiness” for the Certified Specialist of Wine exam (CSW), is also part of the study program. Students are given 60 minutes to execute the test and their result is tabulated upon completion. This program takes wine education to the next level by providing a dynamic learning environment that is 24/7 and completely user-friendly. Includes on-line study modules, wine tastings and blind tasting.

The Certified Specialist of Wine Program (CSW)

What You'll Receive: The 214-page CSW Study Guide, the fifteen-module SWE On-Line study modules and a Comprehensive Exam consisting of 100 multiple-choice questions to be answered within a 60-minute time frame.

The Certified Specialist of Wine Program is the prerequisite for the CWE Exam.

Passing score is: 75% or better

Information is presented in a comprehensive, practical format and is designed to help certification program participants gain a greater understanding of the often-complex world of wine.

In addition, a reference section includes information on wine and health, professional etiquette, tips on wine service and wine storage, commonly used measurements within the industry (with conversions) and a recommended reading list.

The guide is designed for self-paced, self-study and each unit includes a set of review questions to help candidates gauge their comprehension of certain key subject areas. The study guide also includes a complete set of color maps of regions of the world.

Certified Wine Educator (CWE) Program:

-Abstract: recognizes a fluid ability to draw comparisons and recognize contrast within and between the various wine regions, grape varieties and wine styles of the world from both a theoretical and practical standpoint.
-Study materials:The fifteen-module on-line SWE Wine Academy, and recommended list of educational sources.
-Exam: runs four-hours in length and is comprised of three parts, a written segment and two sensory evaluations.

Written: This in-depth exam consists of 85 multiple-choice questions and one essay that tests the candidate’s ability to format information coherently and concisely to a target audience, in this case, the board of examiners. One hour is allotted for the multiple-choice section; thirty minutes for the essay. A combined score of 80% or better is required to pass this segment.

Varietal Wine Identification: This exercise requires matching a set of eight typical varietal wines and/or historic blends with a supplied list of ten possibilities. Thirty minutes is allotted for this blind identification exercise. Successful candidates must identify at least six correctly.

Wine Components and Imbalances: Candidates must identify heightened levels of  standard wine components as well as chemically induced imbalances. The examinee is given thirty minutes to identify oxidation and increased levels of sugar, acid, tannin, acescence, alcohol and sulfur…in addition to correctly recognizing the unadulterated “control”. Successful candidates must identify at least six correctly.

Master-Level Certification: (Under development)

Certified Specialist of Spirits (CSS) Program:
- Abstract: This new designation recognizes a core achievement in having mastered the fundamentals of knowing the distillation of all major Spirit types and categories, mixing history, development and distinguishing characteristics of style and terroir that make each spirit special.

- Prerequisite: The half-day Spirit Intensive Course.
- Exam: One-hour, Multiple Choice format (100 questions)
- Passing Score: 75%
